Jonathan & Andrea Dowell

Jonathan and Andrea Dowell married in 2009 and together felt a strong desire to experience another part of the world. Jonathan was an IT Project Manager for 12 years in his home city of Portland, Oregon and Andrea received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Teaching from George Fox University and taught 8th grade science for four years in Sherwood, Oregon.

Having met in junior high, they spent many years doing ministry together at their church, specifically working with youth and worship ministry. This experience and their desire to use their complimenting skills to serve somewhere in the world led them to start exploring an opportunity to volunteer overseas. They told God they would serve anywhere in the world and do any job He called them to do, and it took more than two years of waiting on God to find an open door. In 2012, they quit their jobs, moved to Kenya as self-funded volunteers, and served with a child sponsorship organization. During that time, they fell in love with the people of Kenya and when their time at that organization ended, they felt God’s calling to stay in Kenya.

Through a series of miraculous God-led circumstances, the Dowells learned about Agape Children’s Ministry in Kisumu and asked if there was a place for them to volunteer for their remaining time in Kenya. During the next four months, the Dowells worked at the Kisumu campuses (Jonathan worked with the Reintegration Team and Andrea worked with Agape Girls) and The Farm at Matoso, and it became very evident that God was calling them to be full time missionaries in Kenya with Agape. This was a path that neither Jonathan nor Andrea ever thought was a possibility for their future, but their year in Kenya revealed a heart for the mighty work that God is doing through Agape. The Dowells moved to Kenya to join Agape full time in January of 2014.
